The Tocobaga Indians were the original settlers of the area now known as Temple Terrace. In both prehistoric and historic times, the group of individuals thrived in the area. In the 17th century, inhabitants started to die off likely because of diseases brought to the New World by Europeans. Since the Indians had no natural resistance, the Tocobaga almost entirely disappeared in the mid 1800s.
Many years later Chicago socialite Bertha Palmer purchased a huge piece of land in Florida and played a huge role in turning Sarasota into an artistic community. A vision of Palmer’s was to turn Temple Terrace into a planned golf course community surrounded by plush citrus groves. Considered the world’s greatest citrus grove, the large farm surrounded the city to the west and north in the 1920s. The new city was named for the hybrid Temple orange and was the first area in the United States to grow abundant quantities of the fruit.
The Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club was built in the 1920s and became the centerpiece of the community. In 1925, the club hosted the first ever Florida open. The mid-century modern architecture of Temple Terrace is still vibrant today.

The club is eligible to be on the National Register of Historic Places because of its beauty and historical significance. Created by famed Scottish designer Tom Bendelow, the development features no two holes that run side-by-side, and was built as a part of the Mediterranean Revival golf course community. Much of the property was acquired by Florida College in the late 1930s and makes up a significant portion of the school’s campus. Families in the area still spend their afternoons enjoying the club and maintaining the city’s history.
