Zephyrhills saw its beginnings as early as 1886 when Simon J. Temple purchased more than 280 acres of land from the Florida Railway and Navigation Corp. He gave the city the name Abbott, which was later changed. The city became famous during the 20th century because of the abundance of freshwater; many people began to flock to the area to "take the water" because it was believed to have healing properties. Over time, as the Tampa Bay Area began to grow, Zephyrhills began to emerge as a quiet suburban community that became well-known for its quality of life, economic development and excellent school system.
Zephyrhills Attractions and Special Events
One of the city's most historical attractions is the Museum of Military History. During the 1940s, many soldiers heading overseas began their training at the once-prominent Zephyrhills Army Airfield. Although much of the base was torn down, one last barracks building remained. Today, the quarters serve as a museum to World War II veterans and other veterans who have bravely served in foreign wars.
During the holiday season, the community loves to take part in the city's Festival of Lights, complete with a holiday parade, live entertainment and lighting contest.
