Living in Buckhead Village

If you’re looking to make the most of Atlanta’s glitz and glamor, you may want to rent a Buckhead apartment. This uptown area combines over thirty neighborhoods—a fifth of the city—into a major commercial, business, and financial center. It’s practically (and threatening to become) a city of its own. It isn’t all cash registers here, however. Buckhead is skyscraping luxury condos and mansions set among towering trees. It’s high-end shopping plazas and suburban-style serenity. Whatever Buckhead’s disparate neighborhoods may be individually however, together they’re known for being among the city’s wealthiest.

Henry Irby bought land in this part Georgia in 1838. He built a general store and tavern. From those humble beginnings sprang Buckhead. The name, lore suggests, comes from a buck’s head Irby had prominently mounted. This was at first a rural vacation spot for wealthy city dwellers. After the First World War, people built mansions here. Then Atlanta annexed the area in 1952. Shortly thereafter, the Lenox Square mall opened. This presaged a shift. Offices and retail turned the Peachtree Road strip into a commercial district. Nightlife ran amok in the 1980s, but that was tamed. Today, Buckhead is known as an excellent place to both live and live large.

Buckhead Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Lenox Square Mall, in Lenox, is one of the largest shopping centers in the south. Phipps Plaza, another mall, is just across the street. Department stores, designer boutiques, and big-box stores are plentiful in Buckhead. You’ll also find two five-star restaurants here—Seeger’s and The Dining Room. Businesses like these are why Buckhead is known as the “Beverly Hills of the East.” While nightlife in Buckhead has calmed considerably since an out-of-control burst in the ‘80s, it’s still an active area.

Chastain Park is the largest green space in this part of the city. There are many other smaller parks, too. Check out Frankie Allen or Alexander parks for your next day in the sun.
