Overview of Downtown Atlanta

Like many city centers around the country, Downtown Atlanta has become an increasingly popular place for the young and hip to call home. It’s an urban neighborhood of skyscrapers, sports arenas, and big businesses. You’ll rub shoulders Downtown with Georgia State students, Coca-Cola executives, and government officials. All sorts head here to achieve their dreams. If bright lights and big city sound good to you, maybe you’ll be happy renting a place in the center of the Big Peach.

Before it was Atlanta, the Downtown area was a town called Terminus; it was where the railroad completed its journey from the northern states. In the 1840s, a new name suggestion—“Atlantica-Pacifica”—was shortened to Atlanta, and so the city was christened. What citizens built here over the following twenty years, General Sherman ordered burned to the ground during the Civil War. Downtown Atlanta rebuilt from the ashes. By the 1920s, a central business district had formed. Today, this neighborhood serves as the center of the New South.

Downtown Lifestyle and Entertainment

Underground Atlanta, in the Five Points area, is where Downtown residents and tourists go to shop and eat and party the night away. The Mall at Peachtree Center is another option, with 60 shops and restaurants, plus a food court. The Georgia Dome is Downtown, home to the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. Philips Arena next-door hosts the Atlanta Hawks, the city’s NBA team. The Georgia Aquarium here is the world’s largest.

Woodruff Park is just one of many green spaces in the Downtown area. There, you can see the Phoenix Memorial commemorating Atlanta’s rebirth following its Civil War incineration. Centennial Olympic Park is the largest park Downtown.

Downtown Info and the Rental Market

Due to new development, Downtown is blossoming with new condos, lofts, and apartments. Businesses are giving way to full time residents here. The average rent for a two-bedroom Downtown apartment is $1,339 a month.

This area is the transportation hub for the city of Atlanta. If you’re heading out from Downtown, you’ll have your choice of freeways, MARTA lines, and buses routes.

Downtown Resources

The Central Library and the Auburn Avenue Research Library of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System are both Downtown. You’ll find a few different United States Post Offices in this part of Atlanta. Downtown is in Atlanta City Council districts 2, 3, and 5. Grady Memorial Hospital is on Jesse Hill Junior Drive.
