Living in Midtown Atlanta

Get yourself a Midtown apartment and you’ll be living in Atlanta’s “Heart of the Arts.” This district between Downtown and Buckhead draws in the crowds—for museums, food, nightlife, and what many residents find to be ideal urban living. Midtown is where you’ll find the famous Fox Theatre, the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and more. Juniper Street serves as a rough division line. To the west there’s high-density development. To the east, residents live closer to street level and to sprawling Piedmont Park. The Midtown section of Peachtree Road remained outside of the Atlanta city limits until after the Civil War. Residential development began in this area around 1880. As the 20th century progressed, fine Midtown homes were joined by retail businesses, then by large-scale commercial development starting in the ‘70s. In modern times, Midtown has boomed with high-rise condo buildings and mixed-use development.

Midtown Lifestyle and Entertainment

Midtown boasts some of Atlanta’s best restaurants and nightlife. This is where the metropolitan crowd comes to eat and drink—and for good reasons. On top of the excellent area eateries, check out Street Food Thursdays for more causal meals. If you’re looking to go out on the town, try around Crescent Avenue. For shopping, Atlantic Station and Ansley Mall are both excellent options. You can find grocery stores and other necessary services in Midtown as well.

This part of Atlanta packs in the arts and entertainment. Concerts, exhibitions, screenings, and festivals all flourish in Midtown. Some of these events take place in Piedmont Park around Lake Clara Meer. This massive mid-city oasis is to Atlanta what Central Park is to Manhattan.

Midtown Info and the Rental Market

If you want to rent in Midtown, there are urban high-rises along Peachtree Road and single-family homes and condos closer to the park. The average rent for a two-bedroom in Midtown is $1,463 a month.

If you’re commuting, the North Avenue, Midtown, and Arts Center MARTA stations are all in Midtown. Substantial bus service runs through this area, too. Parking can be hard to find but the same, alas, is not true of traffic.

Midtown Resources

The Peachtree Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System is in Midtown, across from the Woodruff Arts Center. There’s a United States Post Office on Peachtree Road near 12th Street. Atlanta City Council districts 2 and 6 represent Midtown.
