Living in Toco Hills
Just east of Atlanta and north of Emory University, you’ll find the community of Toco Hills. This part of Briarcliff—or North Druid Hills—serves as a suburban, DeKalb County home for families and professionals. Those opting for Toco Hills rentals value an easy-going environment. That’s how the community rolls. This neighborhood presents all the small town perks you’d want while remaining within striking distance of metro Atlanta.
Toco Hills developed as a neighborhood in the 1950s. At that time two large shopping centers were built at the crossing of Lavista and North Druid Hills roads. People agree that the community took its name from the Toco Hills Shopping Center, but it’s a mystery how the mall’s name came to exist. Toco means “good luck” in a Brazilian Indian language, so that may be it. Another guess is that Toco is a shortened version of “Top of the County.”
Toco Hills Lifestyle and Entertainment
Toco Hills lifestyle focuses on the two shopping centers in the center of the neighborhood. There, you’ll find retails stores such as Office Depot and a bookseller, ethnic restaurants, steakhouses, grocery stores, and coffee shops. There are other commercial areas around as well, where you’ll find a Target, a Loehmann’s, and more.
If you’re looking to spend some time outdoors, Thompson Park is your best bet. It contains trails, ball courts, a playground, and pleasant spots in which to picnic.
