Duluth, GA

Overview of Duluth

Duluth, Georgia, is a suburb of Atlanta that manages to retain its small-town charm despite being just a short drive from the state's capital.

Duluth is commonly known for its financial stability and favorable growth pattern. The city is fairly small at only 9.8 square miles, but those interested in Duluth apartments for rent shouldn't let themselves be put off by the city's size since the best things often come in small packages.

Living in Duluth, GA

Before the city's forefather, farmer and merchant Evan Howell, came to town, however, the area was part of Cherokee Indian territory. The Duluth of today bears little resemblance to the humble settlement of its early days, but Georgia's famous Peachtree Road still runs through it, just as it's done since 1812.

Duluth has received a host of accolades that indicate it's one of the best and most inexpensive places to live in the country. In 2010, it was named One of the Best Affordable Suburbs in America by BusinessWeek Magazine and One of the Best 100 Cities in America by Reader's Digest. The year before, it made NewsMax Magazine's list of Top 10 Communities with the Best American Values.

Duluth has also maintained Tree City designation for approximately a quarter of a century, meaning its tree management plan and program meet four standards established by The Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters.

Duluth Work and Study

Duluth is located in the Gwinnett County Public Schools district, but the area is also home to several private schools, including Notre Dame Catholic Academy and the Duluth Montessori School. DeVry University has a Duluth campus, as does Saint Leo University. That said, the number of schools in the Atlanta metro area is extensive and encapsulates everything from art colleges (the Art Institute of Atlanta) to renowned technical institutes (the Georgia Institute of Technology).

On the job front, leading ATM manufacturer NCR Corporation moved its headquarters to Duluth from Dayton, Ohio, in 2009, and remains a top employer. With a number of global corporations headquartered in nearby Atlanta and the surrounding area - including, perhaps most famously, Coca-Cola Enterprises - there is a cross-section of jobs available for people with rentals in Duluth.

Rentals in Duluth, GA and Cost of Living

According to City-Data.com, Duluth's cost of living ranking was 95.9 in March 2012 - a little below the national average of 100. As for the median gross rent in the area, U.S. Census Bureau data places it at approximately $950. That said, the city is home to many of the area's more upscale neighborhoods, so depending on where you're looking for apartments in Duluth, the price tag may get considerably higher.

Duluth Attractions and Special Events

The biggest event of the year for Duluthians is the annual Fall Festival, which is held as a benefit for downtown Duluth every September. The festivities take place over a weekend and include a parade, a carnival, live entertainment and a 5k road race.

In a nod to the railroad responsible for spearheading its growth, the city is home to the Southeastern Railway Museum, which has been operational since 1970 and houses nearly 100 pieces of retired railroad equipment displayed on a 35-acre site.

There are also a number of golf courses in the area, including the famous TPC Sugarloaf, a private golf club located within the Sugarloaf Country Club's gated community.
