Living in Lithia Springs, GA
The Creek and Cherokee Indians lived in the area now known as Douglas County prior to 1835. An area spanning 10 miles atop the Tallapoosa Ridge was considered a no-man’s land until W.G. Black and his wife established a trading post in the region. The first known settlers didn’t reach the area until 1848.
During the reconstruction period after the Civil War in 1870, Douglas County was created and named after the African-American abolitionist Frederick Douglass. However, the honor changed to Stephen A. Douglas after the control of the Georgia General Assembly was re-established when reconstruction ended.
