Living in Newnan, GA
The first group of people to live in the area that is now Newnan was the Creek Native American tribe. When they gave up their land to the state of Georgia in 1820, development of the area began. Newnan was named for General Daniel Newnan who would become Georgia's Secretary of State and a U.S. Congressman.
Newnan was an extremely successful community after its incorporation in 1828, due to its thriving cotton industry. It became known as one of the richest cities in the country during the mid 1800s. Wealthy business people flocked to the area, which quickly became an economic center in the state. Because of its success, Newnan was able to invest in railroad and modern amenities for its citizens, such as electric street lights and a water system.
Newnan has continued its success into the 21st century. It now is home to 33,725 residents, according to July 2011 data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Today, the city appreciates its past by keeping up its multiple historic districts, but looks to the future to continue to be a leader in the area.
