Overview of Rome

Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near the Alabama/Georgia border, the city of Rome, Ga., is becoming one of the best places to live in the Peach State. With its numerous outdoor activities, beautiful Antebellum architecture, thrilling history and high quality of life, Georgia residents have been calling Rome apartments for rent their new home ever since the city got its start. Oozing with beauty and Southern charm at every turn, this is perfect place for any resident who enjoys sophistication and character. Rome is also home to a diverse and exciting population, full of cultural diversity and hope for the future. According to City-Data, the city has nowhere to go but up, as Rome saw a near 4 percent jump in population from 2000 to 2010.

Living in Rome, GA

The first people to live in Rome were Cherokee Native Americans, but after the Trail of Tears, many European settlers began making their way into the valleys of what is now Floyd County. Rumor has it the city's name was chosen after a dispute between the first five settlers in the area. The five men put their suggestions for a name in a hat - including Pittsburg, Warsaw, Hamburg, Hillsboro and Rome. Colonel Daniel R. Mitchell, the settler who came out victorious, said that the landscape around the city reminded him of the ancient Italian metropolis. Today, Rome is known as the medical hub of Georgia, but the city is also popular with wildlife lovers and outdoor enthusiasts due to its location near three rivers. According to 2010 data from the U.S. Census, the city is home to more than 36,000 residents.

Rome Attractions and Special Events

One of the biggest attractions in the Rome area is John's Mountain Wildlife Management Area, a near 25,000-acre forest that stretches all the way from Rome to Chattanooga (near the Tennessee border). This beautiful tract of land is perfect for year-round camping, scouting, hiking, canoeing, cycling and horseback riding due to Rome's warm climate.
