Overview of Suwanee
A friendly, forward-thinking, and dynamic community located just 34 miles north of Atlanta, Suwanee is one of the state's fastest-growing communities. Multicultural and possessing a high quality of life, Suwanee apartments for rent are home to many Georgia residents from all walks of life. With its excellent school system, small-town Southern charm and plenty of outdoor recreation, this region is the perfect place for Georgia residents to raise a family. Because the city has so much to offer, it has won a number of distinctions, awards and certificates, including being named one of the best green movements by Gwinnett in 2011 and being no. 35 on Money Magazine's list of best places to live in 2009, according to the city's website.
Living in Suwanee, GA
Although historians still battle over how Suwanee got its name, both theories tie it to the area's profound background in Cherokee and Creek Native American culture. The city became official in 1838, and as transportation became more widespread across the country, so did this charming Southern city. Suwanee grew because of the expansion of the Southern Railroad. The city became incorporated in 1949 and remained agricultural until the 1970s when the growth of the highway system in Georgia and the suburban sprawl of Atlanta brought in more residents to the area. In 1970, the population was a mere 615, but today, the area boasts more than 15,300 residents, according to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Suwanee Attractions and Special Events
Perhaps the biggest event in the area is Suwanee Day, a festival that has been part of the community for more than 25 years. Complete with a parade, design competition, 5K and 10K, a variety of musical entertainment, arts and crafts, and a variety of food vendors, Suwanee Day has developed into an event that residents look forward to every year.
