Living in Valdosta, GA
Originally known as Troupville, the Lowndes County seat chose to move four miles south and rename itself in 1860 when the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad line originally passed it by. Named for Val d’Aosta, the plantation home of Georgia Governor George Troup, the new city grew as an agricultural hub fueled by cotton planting, and its boom years around the turn of the 20th century produced much of the iconic architecture that remains today. Agriculture is still an important part of the Valdosta area economy, although following the boll weevil’s arrival in the early 1900s, production shifted to other crops, and these days the city is largely a producer of pine trees.
Home to around 55,000 people, Valdosta is perhaps best known for the high-caliber high school football programs at Valdosta and Lowndes High Schools, which have earned the city national recognition as well as national and state titles.
