Living in Bloomingdale, IL

The history of the village of Bloomingdale traces back to the Meacham family, who started a farm on 1,200 acres of land. Five years later in 1837, the first post office was established in Bloomingdale, and by 1845 the region that now makes up Bloomingdale, Roselle and Medinah became DuPage. In 1873, the Chicago and Pacific Railroad was constructed through the northern part of the plotted land, which created a domino effect in development. New retail businesses included two boot and shoemakers, a tailor shop, men’s clothing shop and a cheese factory. Today, this part of the town’s history lives on in an area considered Old Town. Between 1895 and 1904, the Chicago Telephone Company installed poles and wires, cement sidewalks were laid and an 8-mile-per-hour road was paved.

In the early 1900s, Bloomingdale and Roselle shared a fire engine and library books, until the village of Bloomingdale was incorporated by itself. The population and growth of the community grew at a rapid pace through the 1950s to the 1970s. Today, the heritage of Bloomingdale has been preserved so residents enjoy the past with the present.
