In hopes of forming a new town along the Illinois Central Railroad in 1852, three men purchased 360 acres of land, but it didn’t begin to prosper until after the Civil War. Carbondale was a business and transportation hub, and later became a well-known center for education after the founding of Carbondale College, which later changed to Southern Illinois College.
As the town is home to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale apartments are home to many students and faculty members. The school is the top employer in town, offering employment to 7,100 people. DuQuoin State Fair, although not hosted in Carbondale, is just down the road in DuQuoin. Residents flock to the annual event that boasts live entertainment, exhibits, rides, animals, food vendors and competitions.
