Overview of Edgewater

Rent an Edgewater apartment and mix it up in one of Chicago’s old school neighborhoods. What was once the stomping ground of the city’s most affluent families is now diverse and delightfully affordable. Edgewater encompasses a few different areas, including Andersonville, Broadway, Edgewater Glen, and others. Up here at the northern end of Lake Shore Drive you’ll find a close-knit community that’s big on block parties and supporting local business.

Developer John Cochran named Edgewater in 1885 when he built the area’s first residential subdivision. By the turn of the 20th century, mansions covered the lakefront. Chicago’s wealthy families hung around until the 1950s, then they felt the draw of the suburbs. The neighborhood fell into decline, but it’s been bouncing back since the 1980s. Edgewater has welcomed many waves of immigrants, from Swedes early on to Ethiopians and others more recently.

Edgewater Lifestyle and Entertainment

As you’d guess from the name, Edgewater is big on beaches. They’re less crowed up here than closer to the city center. Lincoln Park, Chicago’s largest green space, begins in this neighborhood and continues south.

Edgewater is bustling with ethnic restaurants along Broadway. Remnants of the early Swedish community keep bakeries, delicatessens, and more in business. Also check out the Middle-Eastern places in Andersonville. Most of what you’ll find in Edgewater is locally owned shops and restaurants. The Hopleaf Bar on North Clark Street is one of the city’s best gastro pubs and it has an excellent beer selection.

Edgewater Info and the Rental Market

Living in Edgewater looks different depending on which side of Broadway you choose. On the lakeside, you’ll find high-rise apartments, condos, and mid-rise homes. To the west, it’s more single-family homes and two- to four-story flats. Rental prices vary, but expect to pay around $900 a month for a one-bedroom apartment near the beach.

Edgewater commuters will most likely make use of the ‘L’ Red Line trains, with stations along Broadway. Metra commuter rail stations aren’t too far off, either. You’ll find express busses headed Downtown along Lake Shore Drive. If you’re in your own car, prepare for atrocious parking.

Edgewater Resources

Edgewater falls within three Chicago City Council wards—the 40th, the 48th, and the 49th. The Edgewater Branch of the Chicago Public Library is on Elmdale Avenue. There’s a United States Post Office on Devon Avenue. Kindred Chicago Lakeshore Hospital is on North Sheridan Road.
