Living in Chicago’s Gold Coast

If you’re looking at Gold Coast apartments, you shouldn’t be surprised to find the neighborhood’s name reflected in rental prices. This part of the Near North Side community area, just north of the Loop, is immaculate and wealthy. Not only is it Chicago’s richest neighborhood, but it’s also one of the most affluent in the whole country. Gold Coast is a got-it-and-flaunt-it place with lake views, exclusive shops, and—surprisingly—a few affordable apartments, too.

Gold Coast came into its own following the Great Chicago Fire. Millionaire Potter Palmer filled in some swampland here and built Palmer Mansion, a castle-style building with 42 rooms. Other members of Chicago’s elite followed Palmer’s lead. In the 1980s, Gold Coast was ranked behind only the Upper East Side of Manhattan in a list of the United States’ most affluent neighborhoods.

Gold Coast Lifestyle and Entertainment

Shopping on the Magnificent Mile is often compared to shopping on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. If you want designer goods at designer prices, look no further. You can also buy yourself a Lamborghini. Restaurants are likewise high-end in the Gold Coast neighborhood, with classic and contemporary menus. If your budget isn’t billionaire sized, don’t fret. You can find some reasonable shops and eats if you poke around.

Some Gold Coast bars and clubs stay open until dawn. Take a cruise through the “Viagra Triangle” where the young and beautiful fish for the old and rich. If you’re more in the mood for daytime revelry, try the local beaches, which are beautiful but crowded.

Gold Coast Info and the Rental Market

Gold Coast is primarily an older community with many empty nesters. Rents are seriously high in most buildings. You can find mansions, row houses, and luxury high-rise apartments as well as a few cheaper options. A two-bedroom Gold Coast apartment rents for an average of $2,657 a month.

If you’re commuting, the Loop isn’t far away. The ‘L’ Red Line runs down State Street and there are some CTA buses as well. Parking here isn’t easy, but there are garages if you want to pay.

Gold Coast Resources

Gold Coast falls within two Chicago City Council wards—the 42nd and the 43rd. Here, you’ll find the Water Works Branch of the Chicago Public Library. There’s a United States Post Office on Ontario Street. Prentice Women’s Hospital is on East Superior Street.

Gold Coast Zip Codes

Zip codes serving Gold Coast are 60610 and 60611.
