Living in Kenwood

Take a walk through lush Kenwood and its appeal is apparent. This gorgeous area was once one of Chicago’s premiere neighborhoods. While times have changed, some of the city’s largest homes remain here, soaking up the lake views.

Chicago annexed Kenwood in 1889 when it was part of Hyde Park. The neighborhood attracted elite Chicagoans, and they built luxurious homes here. In the 1970s, depopulation and decline struck, particularly in north Kenwood. That downfall reached its nadir in the 1990s. Today, Kenwood is a popular choice for renters. This is the part of Chicago that President Barack Obama calls home when he’s not at the White House.

Kenwood Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kenwood is primarily a residential neighborhood. The main commercial strip is 47th Street. There, you’ll find a supermarket, cafés, and some shops. While there are good places to eat in Kenwood, it isn’t a foodie destination. Nightlife is quiet. You’ll have to make do with a couple of local bars.

Along the lakefront, Burnham Park provides residents with ample green space as well as beaches and a skate park. The Hyde Park Art Center is another neighborhood gem. This exhibition space makes many must-see lists.

Kenwood Info and the Rental Market

Kenwood rentals include everything from cheaper apartments to luxury condos and mansions. A two-bedroom in Kenwood averages $1,185 a month in rent.

For commuters, the Metra South Shore Line stops at 47th Street Station. The Green Line of the ‘L’ stops a bit farther away, on the other side of Calumet Avenue. A few city bus lines run through the area.

Kenwood Resources

Kenwood falls within Chicago City Council Ward 4. The architecturally impressive Blackstone Branch of the Chicago Public Library is in Kenwood. There’s a United States Post Office on Cottage Grove Avenue, just outside of Kenwood.
