Living on the Near North Side
Rent a Near North Side apartment and you’ll be living among the high and mighty—we’re talking both people and buildings! This is the part of Chicago just above the Loop that collects some of the city’s most affluent areas. From the Gold Coast to Goose Island, the Near North Side is a primarily a ritzy ride along a well-trod tourist trail. The Near North Side also includes Streeterville, Old Town, and River North.
The first known permanent settlement in “Eschecagou” was on the Near North Side. Pioneer Court marks that location. In 1885, the ultra rich Potter Palmer built a castle on the Gold Coast. Now, Chicagoans come here to stroll among the skyscrapers, ride the Ferris wheel on Navy Pier, and to enjoy their swank Chicago apartments.
Near North Side Lifestyle and Entertainment
Shopping and dining on the Near North Side is all about the bling. You’ll find upscale boutiques and shops like Chanel and Rolex along the Magnificent Mile. You can also get yourself a Lamborghini in the Gold Coast neighborhood. Don't forget the Gallery District in River North, too. If you’re looking for something less flashy, try the Water Tower Place shopping center.
You can eat at casual-chic theme restaurants, check out clubby bars, and enjoy the movie theaters on the Near North Side. This neighborhood is also where you’ll find the world famous Second City comedy troupe. There are a few small parks on the Near North Side, as well as the Lakefront Trail.
Near North Side Info and the Rental Market
This is one of Chicago’s priciest areas. Expect to pay around $2,578 for a two-bedroom. The Near North Side is just above the Loop, so commuting from here is quick and easy. The ‘L’ Brown, Red, and Purple lines all run through the neighborhood. You’ll find plenty of buses on the Near North Side as well.

The Near North Side falls within four Chicago City Council wards—the 27th, the 32nd, the 42nd, and the 43rd. Within the area, you’ll find the Near North and Water Works branches of the Chicago Public Library. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is in Streeterville. There are two United States Post Offices on the Near North Side.
