Living in Ravenswood

Renting a Ravenswood apartment means living along tree-lined streets in one of Chicago’s most family friendly neighborhoods. This community prides itself on its charming and semi-suburban atmosphere. Ravenswood encloses the commercial blocks of Lincoln Square, but that busyness doesn’t intrude. The interesting eats and shops you will find on Ravenswood streets don’t spoil the gentle calm here.

Ravenswood is an affluent area by design. In 1868, real estate speculators made a deal with the railroad; the developers would guarantee business if the railroad built a Ravenswood stop. Since a hundred rides cost $7.20—a lot of money back then—the land here was split into lots large enough to attract the wealthy. And that’s how it worked. In 1907. The ‘L’ reached Ravenswood. Cheaper public transportation brought apartments and other affordable living options to the area.

Ravenswood Lifestyle and Entertainment

Ravenswood is known for its independent businesses, charming cafés, and popular brunch spots. You can find a variety of ethnic food options around, too. Ravenswood offers up antique stores, adorable boutiques, posh pet supply places, and other options for shopping. The Long Room has a great patio on which to enjoy a beer on a summer evening, but nightlife in Ravenswood isn’t lively.

If you want to spend time outdoors, Ravenswood has you covered. To the west is Ronan Park and River Park, where you’ll find a pool, a dog run, sports fields, and trails. More central is Winnemac Park, with a playground, a stadium, and plenty of space.

Ravenswood Info and the Rental Market

Most of the rentals in Ravenswood come in courtyard-style residential buildings. You’ll also find single-family homes, condos, and other types of apartments here. The Ravenswood crowd is made up of professional singles and couples, families, and seniors. A two-bedroom apartment averages $1,488 a month in rent.

This part of Chicago is easy on commuters. Stopping in Ravenswood you’ll find Brown Line trains on the ‘L’, Metra commuter trains, and 24-hour buses.

Ravenswood Resources

Lincoln Square falls within two Chicago City Council wards—the 40th and the 47th. You’ll find the Sulzer Regional Branch of the Chicago Public Library on Lincoln Avenue.
