Rogers Park, Chicago, IL
Living in Rogers Park
Rogers Park rentals house one of the most diverse communities in the country. That’s extra impressive for a fairly segregated city like Chicago. Students from Loyola and Northwestern universities, artists, aging hippies, families, low-income seniors, and immigrants from around the world all make their homes here. Rogers Park loves its melting pot, mom & pop neighborhood feel. It's a place you can find your local haunt, get away from the crowds, and score a reasonably priced apartment.
Rogers Park Lifestyle and Entertainment
Economic development efforts have been turning vacant storefronts in Rogers Park into shopping and dining delights. The new Gateway Centre Plaza is one example of the way things are going. Ethnic eateries abound here, as well. Take your pick between Jamaican, Mexican, Ethiopian, Peruvian, Chinese, Mediterranean, and other options. Most places are family-run and community friendly. You’ll find some student bars in Rogers Park, but there’s not a ton of nightlife.
You’ll be close to many beaches and parks in Rogers Park, and they’ll often be less crowded than others in the city. North Shore Avenue Park and Beach has volleyball courts and a fitness area, for example.
Rogers Park Info and the Rental Market
Rogers Park is a good place to track down some affordable housing. Rental options here range from smaller apartments in big, cheap buildings to single-family homes on quiet streets. You can find luxury condos in high-rises, too. The average two-bedroom here rents for $1,212 a month.
While parking may be hard in Rogers Park, public transportation is easy to find. There are four stations where you can catch Red Line trains on the ‘L.’ These stops are among the first on the line, which means you can probably score a seat. Metra commuter rail trains stop at Rogers Park station, too. Buses run on Chicago Avenue and others. Rogers Park is a good ways from the Loop and the South Side, so your commute may take some time.
Rogers Park Resources
Rogers Park falls within two Chicago City Council wards—the 40th and the 49th. Within the area, you’ll find the Rogers Park branch of the Chicago Public Library. Loyola University of Chicago is in Rogers Park. There is a United States Post Office on West Devon Avenue.
