Overview of South Shore

South Shore’s congenial community contains some of Chicago’s finest residential architecture. Take a stroll around the neighborhood to appreciate gorgeous 19th century homes in American Four-Square, Prairie, and other styles. It’s not all high-end living here, however. Primarily, South Shore is middle class. You’ll get charming tree-lined streets, but also some crime. South Shore includes the upper crust Jackson Park Highlands and less-safe areas as well. The World’s Columbian Exposition held in next-door Jackson Park in 1893 helped bring South Shore to prominence. Fine residential buildings were built here at that time.

South Shore Lifestyle and Entertainment

In 1974, the exclusive South Shore Country Club was purchased by the Chicago Park District and converted into the public South Shore Cultural Center. Its golf course, tennis facilities, beaches, and more all benefit local residents. Additionally, Chicago Lakeside Development is working on creating new parklands along South Shore’s waterfront. South Shore has some worthwhile restaurants. People particularly appreciate the good local soul food and Caribbean places. That’s a Burger on 71st Street also gets high marks.

South Shore Info and the Rental Market

South Shore rental options include high-rises, mid-rise buildings, bungalows, row houses, and single-family homes. The average two-bedroom in South Shore rents for $937 a month.

If you’re commuting, South Shore is far from the Loop, but it’s right on Lake Shore Drive. You can catch express buses or Metra Electric District commuter trains here. You’ll have to head to Woodlawn to get Green Line trains on the ‘L.’

South Shore Resources

South Shore falls within three Chicago City Council wards—the 5th, 7th, and 8th. The South Shore Branch of the Chicago Public Library can be found in the neighborhood. Jackson Park Hospital is on Stony Island Avenue. There are two United States Post Offices in South Shore.
