Living in Uptown
Your Uptown apartment may be imbued with the spirit of Charlie Chaplin, Benny Goodman, or even Al Capone. This part of Chicago was and still is an entertainment hotspot. Majestic ballrooms and movie palaces here drew in big names and huge crowds—including Prohibition-era gangsters. Some of those historic venues still stage shows today. While Uptown may appear run down in parts, it’s undergoing a rapid revival. New shops and eateries pop up here every day.
Uptown Lifestyle and Entertainment
Uptown is best known for its great live music and nightlife. The Green Mill jazz club is just one of many historic venues open in the area. There are also theaters and comedy clubs and bars to check out. Southeast Asian ethnic restaurants and markets enliven the Little Vietnam neighborhood. Most of these places are family run. Take your pick, be it Chinese, Thai, or Laotian. Uptown is turning into a better place to shop, as well.
For the athletically inclined, Margate Fieldhouse has a gym and fitness facility and a playground. Lincoln Park covers the lakeshore here, with athletic fields, the Lakefront Trail, and beaches.
Uptown Info and the Rental Market
It can be a cheaper area in which to rent, and that’s appealing to people of all ages, with or without families. Your options range from the more suburban Buena Park neighborhood, to both the mansions and transitional housing of Margate Park, to cheaper studios and other apartments scattered throughout. A two-bedroom in this part of town rents for an average of $1,533 a month./
Commuters from Uptown mostly take Red Line trains on the ‘L,’ which stops at stations off Broadway. You can also hop onto Brown Line and Metra commuter rail trains not too far from Uptown.
Uptown Resources
Uptown falls within three Chicago City Council wards—the 46th, the 47th, and the 48th. The Bezazian and Uptown branches of the Chicago Public Library are both in this neighborhood. There’s a United States Post Office on North Broadway. Methodist Hospital of Chicago, Weiss Memorial Hospital, and others can be found in Uptown.
