Glen Ellyn, IL
Overview of Glen Ellyn
Known as the “Village of Volunteers,” Glen Ellyn is a charming suburb located 27 miles west of Chicago. In 2011, CNNMoney ranked Glen Ellyn as no. 54 on its annual list of America’s Best Small Towns because of local residents’ civil pride, time dedicated to family events, and other recreational activities. Less than 28,000 people live here, allowing the area to maintain a small-town feel, but still providing easy access to big city amenities. Look for Glen Ellyn apartments for rent, and find one of Illinois’ most scenic communities.
Living in Glen Ellyn, IL
Deacon and Mercy Churchill moved west from New York in 1834 and settled on the east branch of the DuPage River. The local inn-farmhouse, called Stacy’s Corners, was built in 1846 and became very popular with traveling farmers taking their produce to Chicago until the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was built. The town’s population grew during the Civil War, and when the battles ended in 1865, residents strung red, white and blue bunting on their front porches to welcome home local soldiers. Glen Ellyn had a rejuvenated, happy atmosphere making the town increasingly popular with Chicagoans looking to escape the city. Through the 20th century, Glen Ellyn made the transition from farmlands to suburbia. Today, Glen Ellyn is home to rolling woodland hills, sky-high old trees and a variety of architectural styles. With 29 parks and a pedestrian-friendly downtown district, the town has something to offer everyone.
Glen Ellyn Attractions and Special Events
The Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ Cook-Off fosters friendly competitive spirit among the local chefs, also known as the Bar-B-Crew. Barbecuing aside, the event features live blues music, a bags tournament and food and beer sales. Residents here also enjoy the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, an annual event inviting teams to build a human-powered cardboard boat that can survive a pre-set course. Other local favorite events include JazzFest, Lake Ellyn fireworks and the Festival of the Arts at Lake Ellyn.
