The history of Mundelein began as early as 1650 when the Potawatomi Indians were trading with French fur traders. The first known settler to the area is Peter Shaddle, who built a log cabin in 1835 on the grounds of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. To escape the industrial depression, a group of English immigrants came to the area and named their community Mechanics Grove, where they built churches and schools. During this time, a man named John Holcomb purchased a large piece of land, and he became a key player in the development of the area.
The name of the area went through many changes until 1924 when it was named after Cardinal Mundelein in recognition of his efforts to create a new seminary. Over the next few decades, Mundelein became a thriving community with many businesses and industries. The continual growth is partly because of the strong citizen participation in bettering the village and ensuring residents maintain the rich traditions and high quality of life offered in Mundelein.
