Overview of Normal

Located in the heart of central Illinois and home to three popular colleges, including Illinois State University, the city of Normal is becoming one of the most sought-after communities in the Land of Lincoln. According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2010 population was nearly 53,000, indicative of the city's growth over the past few years. If you are a student attending one of the many colleges in the area, it may be wise to find the Normal apartments for rent that are best suited to your needs well before school starts in the fall or spring semesters.

Living in Normal, IL

Formerly known as North Bloomington, the city was plotted as early as 1854 to make way for the intersection of the Illinois Central and the Chicago and Alton railroads. The town was officially incorporated in 1867 and soon after became a refuge for Civil War orphans, showing the city's philanthropic roots. In the late 1800s, Normal boomed with plenty of business in the agricultural and manufacturing industries. In the early 1930s, the city became known for Steak n' Shake, a dining room attached to a Shell station in town owned by Gus and Edith Belt. The restaurant chain soon popularized and became a great source of pride. After Mitsubishi Motors came into the area in the 1980s, the city continued to establish itself as a small manufacturing hub.

Normal Attractions and Special Events

One of the best ways to get to know the community is to attend the Sweet Corn Blues Festival held in the city at the end of the summer. With more than 50,000 ears of fresh sweet corn, sidewalk sales, arts, crafts and live blues music, this event is held annually to celebrate the born harvest and welcome the students of Illinois State back to the community.
