Overview of Skokie

Conveniently located just 16 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the village of Skokie has a history of being one of the area's most independent and thriving communities. With its charming downtown, burgeoning retail district, excellent schools and several major institutions and businesses, Skokie is a great place to call home. Commuters should be especially interested in Skokie apartments for rent, as the Chicago Transit Authority operates a transit line that connects the village to the greater Chicago area. According to City-Data, other Illinois residents are taking note of everything Skokie has to offer, as the village has seen an increase in population from 2000 to 2010.

Living in Skokie, IL

The founding father of Skokie was Henry Harms, a Prussian immigrant who set up the merchant and postmaster in the city during its early beginnings. At the turn of the 20th century, Skokie became known for its many vegetable farms and greenhouses. After the Chicago and North Western Railroad allowed passengers to travel to and from Chicago easily, many Illinois residents began making the move here due to the village's stability and economic growth. Today, Skokie is home to more than 65,000 residents, according to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Skokie is known for being a village of young families, as more than one-fifth of the population is 18 or younger.
