Historic Wheaton is a vibrant community just about 25 miles outside Chicago. It has quiet residential areas in addition to a thriving business district. The city's involved citizens make Wheaton a great place to meet others and become integrated in the area.
Wheaton apartments for rent can be found in various neighborhoods around the city, and many properties are in high demand due to their proximity to public transportation and the downtown area.
In the 1830s, the Wheaton brothers came to Illinois from New England and laid claims on several hundred acres of land in the area. The brothers gave a new railroad a few miles of complimentary right-of-way and offered up land around the new train station to anyone willing to build. The rail line and prospect of land near the station helped the community to grow.
Wheaton began to prosper and became an important city in DuPage County. It successfully campaigned to move the seat of government from Naperville to Wheaton in 1867, where it is still located today.
Those searching for Wheaton apartments will find that even though the area embraces its historic past, it thrives in the modern world.
Wheaton College was founded more than 150 years ago, when Warren Wheaton donated the land it was constructed on. The Princeton Review featured the school in its 2012 edition of The Best 376 Colleges. Students also have the opportunity to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology, which has one of its five campuses located in Wheaton.
Because the DuPage County Government Center is located in Wheaton, it is a large employer of residents. Other large public-sector employers are local School District 200, the Wheaton Park District and the City of Wheaton. Wheaton College, Jewell Foods and JPMorgan Chase employ the most residents in the private sector. Since Wheaton is close to downtown Chicago and has several train stations, some residents find Wheaton to be a great commuter city.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that most apartments in Wheaton range from about $1,000 to $2,000 per month. The same source reveals that the median gross monthly rent in the city is $1,083.
Residents looking to cut down on household expenses will find that Wheaton's excellent transportation systems make it easy to get around without an automobile. Two train stations take locals to downtown Chicago, and the Pace Suburban Bus Service shuttles residents to multiple locations around the area. Wheaton was also listed as sixth on the list of Top Transit Suburbs of Metropolitan Chicago, according to a study conducted by DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.
One of Wheaton's popular attractions is Cantigny Park. The 500-acre grounds are ideal for those looking for lots to do. The park offers everyone the opportunity to explore nature, learn about history, enjoy an outdoor concert, play golf and take classes. Multiple museums and gardens are on the property, and events take place regularly. Kids will love playing and climbing on the military tanks and imagining life as a member of the military.
The entire family will enjoy a day at Cosley Zoo, with exhibits that feature farm animals and Illinois wildlife in settings that mirror their natural habitats. The zoo prides itself on its conservation efforts and works to benefit endangered species and educate the public. The zoo even features a stationary caboose onsite, and visitors can explore the exhibits inside it.
Every Saturday morning from spring through autumn, the Wheaton French Market is open for business. This community event is much more than a standard farmers market and those who stop by will find much more than vegetables. Residents can browse the outdoor market in the downtown area, and will find items such as local produce, baked goods, crafts and flowers.
