Overview of Zion

Zion apartments for rent put residents along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, roughly 40 miles north of the bustling city of Chicago. Zion is part of Lake County and is situated just south of the state line of Wisconsin and merely 40 miles away from Milwaukee.

Zion has an estimated population of more than 24,500 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's numbers from July 2011. The city encompasses roughly 9.81 square miles of land. Residents enjoy the easy access Zion provides to major transportation routes, including a Metra train that leads to downtown Chicago, and close proximity to Interstate 94 and U.S. Route 41. Zion also is minutes away from Waukegan Regional Airport and less than an hour's drive from O'Hare International Airport.

Living in Zion, IL

Zion has a unique history.  According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, Zion was incorporated in 1902, springing from a dream for a utopian city by John Alexander Dowie. Dowie announced his dream of creating a utopian Christian city on the northeastern edge of Illinois and 5,000 people jumped on board. Zion was named after the mountain on which the city of Jerusalem was built. The city was planned to be a unique haven void of any racial antagonism and operated under fundamentalist morals.

Those considering Zion apartments might be interested to learn that in an effort to make Zion a city free from crime and other vices, Dowie established something called the "Zion City Lease" in the late nineteenth century. The Lease forbade gambling, theatres, circuses, the manufacture and sale of tobacco and alcohol, pork, dancing, swearing, spitting, politicians, doctors, oysters, and shoes in the tan color. These prohibitions do not stand today.

Zion Work and Study

According to the city of Zion website, Zion has a vibrant business community. There are small specialty stores, restaurants and service shops in Zion's downtown business district, and larger stores are peppered throughout the rest of the city. Zion apartments for rent can be a great idea for people bringing new business to the city, as Zion is currently working to attract new retail, commercial and light industrial projects to the area.

While there are few higher education facilities within the city borders, there are a number of nearby colleges and universities for students to take advantage of. Notable schools include the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Shimer College in Waukegan and Trinity College in Bannockburn.

The data further indicated that almost half of all renters reported spending 35 percent or more of their household income on gross rental costs.

City-Data information revealed that in March 2012, the cost of living in Zion was assigned a value of 101.1 points, which is only 1.1 percent more than the national average of 100 points.
