Overview of Alexandria

Many towns claim to be "Small Town USA," but Alexandria truly is. This town in central Indiana was selected by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1943 as the perfect community to feature in a picture they showed the rest of the world. People looking for Alexandria apartments for rent will find a relatively small city - it has a little more than 5,000 residents - and an abundance of civic pride.

Living in Alexandria, IN

Alexandria was established more than 150 years ago because of the promise of the Indiana central canal. The canal was quickly deemed obsolete though, due to the invention of the railroad, so Alexandria had to earn its own name. It quickly attracted a lot of industry and became famous during World War II, when the United States Office of War Information featured Alexandria in "Small Town, U.S.A."

Many Alexandria residents commute to nearby towns such as Anderson, Muncie, and even Indianapolis, but residents who do work in town often find jobs in manufacturing, retail trade, and construction industries. Students attend the Alexandria Community School Corporation, which recently received a top grade of "A" by the state and Alexandria High School was named by Newsweek as one of the top schools in the nation. The area is home to more than 20 places of worship and locally owned shops and restaurants. It offers close proximity to several medical centers and institutes of higher education.

Alexandria Attractions and Special Events

People in Alexandria rentals take part in a multitude of annual, community-oriented events such as the Alexandria Grand Prix, the Madison County 4-H Fair, and a seasonal farmers market. An oddity in the town is the World's Largest Ball of Paint, which has been repainted since the 1960s by Michael Carmichael, and visitors can set up an appointment to see the world record holder. When residents want the feel of a bigger city, they can travel to Indianapolis, which is approximately 68 miles northeast.
