By the early 1900s, the county became quickly recognized because of its 101 lakes - most notably Lake James, which is the state’s third largest lake.

Today, the community’s rich history lives on in some of the area’s buildings. Powers Church and the former county jail in rural Angola are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the Steuben County Courthouse.

Northern Indiana Lakes Country offers residents year-round recreation such as fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding, skiing and sledding. On the shores of Lake James lies Pokagon State Park, a 1,260-acre park featuring endless amenities including a twin-track, quarter-mile toboggan run. The refrigerated track withstands nearly any weather so riders can speed down the 1,780-foot hill in approximately 35 seconds.

Historic downtown in Angola is home to the Brokaw Theatre, a vintage spot that opened its doors in 1932. Strand Theater is another historic spot, although the opening date isn’t known.
