Avon, Ind., is located approximately five miles west of Indianapolis in Hendricks County. The city has a population of approximately 12,600. What began as an agricultural leader - it is the birthplace of soybeans in America - is now a thriving suburb. The town has grown tremendously since 1952, when there were only three businesses. Avon dates back to 1858, when the city's first store was opened by a pack-peddler, someone who was coming through the area with goods. The city saw major agricultural growth after the Civil War. In the early 1990s, the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern Traction line opened through Avon and the town's population increased. The city continued to grow during the century, and Avon was incorporated in 1995.
Avon today offers people close proximity to all Indianapolis has to offer as well as its own successful business community. History buffs and visitors alike will enjoy the Avon World War II Memorial Park, which was created by Avon residents in 2012. All residents look forward to many annual events, including Hendricks County Rib Fest, Avon Community Heritage Festival and the WWII Memorial Car Show.
