A year later, they donated 60 acres to the county, which eventually led to the town becoming the county seat. The town was named after the home of the brothers’ great-grandparents' hometown of Frankfurt, Germany. The original plat of Frankfort consisted of 64 lots in eight blocks around a public town square in 1830.

During the electric light area, Frankfort got its name as the Gem City, because people claimed to be able to see the town from miles away on the prairie.

The Hot Dog Festival is a beloved community event that began in 1994. This fun festival boasts plenty of entertainment like live music, shopping and food. Throughout the years, the event has had many goofy attractions, such as 2012’s Double Dog Dare Triathlon; however, the event traditionally hosts a dachshund race. Starting each year with a 5K, residents enjoy various types of hot dogs, karaoke, a flea market, crafts and the Greatest American Hot Dog Challenge.
