Hammond, Ind., is located in the northwest region of the state, on Lake Michigan at the Indiana-Illinois border. It has a population of roughly 80,700 and is the most populated city in Lake County. Hammond is historically an industrial city, but recent updates have made it more family- and environmentally-friendly. During the 1850s, the Hammond area began to grow from its original 97 residents. Several railroads granted access to the town during the late 1800s and its population increased.
