Huntington, Ind., is situated in the northeast region of the state, roughly 33 miles southwest of Fort Wayne. It has a population of approximately 17,400 and is the seat of Huntington County. People looking for Huntington apartments for rent will find a tight-knit town with something for everybody.
Living in Huntington, IN
Huntington County was organized in 1834, and by 1849 it had a population of 700. The county saw an increase in its population around that time because European settlers were able to access the area on the Wabash and Erie Canal and it spurred development. Huntington is known as as the "Lime City" because its early commerce was built around limestone quarries and kilns.
People with apartments in Huntington enjoy its convenient location on Interstate 69 and close proximity to Fort Wayne, Indiana's second largest city. It is also an industrial hub, offering more than 5,000 residents jobs and drawing in 3,000 commuters everyday. Its most popular industries are manufacturing and construction. Huntington offers many amenities, such as the Huntington Municipal Airport and several institutes of higher education, including Huntington University and IVY Tech Community College of Northeast Indiana. Residents also have access to several parks, the Lime City Trail and sports leagues through the Huntington Parks and Recreation Department.
Huntington Attractions and Special Events
Car buffs enjoy two annual antique car shows at Huntington University. More than 20,000 residents attend the Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival each year, which offers residents and visitors alike a chance to explore antiques, entertainment and crafts from that time period. Families also join together in the Heritage Day Parade and week long activities. Residents of all ages enjoy several year-round attractions through the Huntington Parks and Recreation Department, including the Hayes-Lemmerz Skate Park, Bendix-Hiner Spray Park and Memorial Hills Disc Golf Course. Sunken Gardens also serves as a haven for residents to enjoy fieldstone footbridges and well-kept gardens dating back to 1924.
