Once a Potawatomi province, the previously forested area was cleared and settled during the mid-1800s. The region was originally called McGwinn Village, but its name changed first to Wiggins Point and then to Centerville. The region was known for its 16 roads, which provided transportation between local trading posts. When the Merrill brothers moved to town, the region's name was changed to Merrillville. Although it has a rich history, Merrillville was not incorporated as a town until 1971.
