Living in Mishawaka
Mishawaka was actually created from several smaller cities in 1833. Following a fire that destroyed many businesses in 1872, the city was able to successfully expand with the help of the Dodge Manufacturing Company and the Mishawaka Woolen and Rubber Company, which later became Uniroyal. Agriculture was also important to the area, causing the city to become known as the “Peppermint Capital of the World.”
Today, the city is home to almost 50,000 residents and a variety of industries. It still values its history and small town feel. Many new neighborhoods are built in the same style as the older neighborhoods of which the city is so proud.
Parks and outdoor spaces are also an important part of the heritage of the city. There are 29 parks found throughout the area. You and your family will want to be sure to check out Merrifield Park, which features an Olympic-size swimming pool.
For those renting apartments Mishawaka, getting around can be easy with or without a car. Although the highway system makes it easy to get wherever you may want to go, the South Bend Public Transportation Corporation, known as Transpo, services the area as well. Rates are reasonable and make it easy to get from your neighborhood to work every day.
