Living in Muncie, IN

In the early 1800s, Munseetown was located along the White River, and was visited by British soldiers and Moravian missionaries before settlers made their claim on the land. In the early 1800s, Indians traveled to the Indiana territory, which was then a part of the Northwest Territory and was governed under the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. By 1827, Delaware County was founded as a small Indian village.

Like most other Midwestern communities, Muncie’s history is rooted with an agricultural and industrial past. After the arrival of the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad in 1852, industrial development began to prosper and aided in the growth of Muncie. The Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company’s move from Buffalo, New York, in 1888 played a significant role in the growth of the economy in Muncie.  Although the company moved to Colorado in 1998, the legacy of the Ball family lives on in Ball State University and Ball Memorial Hospital.

Another company that made a huge impact on the economic development is Warner Gear, which pioneered the development of automotive transmissions throughout the 20th century. The company conquered many milestones, including the standardization of the industry’s first manual transmission. In 1928 Warner Gear merged with other automotive companies to become Borg-Warner.
