Overview of Muncie

Located in Delaware County, Muncie is approximately 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis and is surrounded by Grant and Blackford counties. The dynamic community of Muncie has been named by Money Magazine as one of the top five "Up and Coming Cities" with a population of less than 250,000. Also, Muncie is the only city that was recognized as “Community of the Year” by the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce two times.

Muncie apartments for rent are near diverse options for entertainment, dining and shopping. Downtown Muncie is a hub for creatives, families, young professionals and retirees. Although there is a bustling downtown center, there are many areas where residents can enjoy the great outdoors. The Prairie Creek Reservoir, for instance, spans 1,275 acres of water and 750 acres of land, where visitors enjoy water activities like boating, fishing and swimming.

According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Muncie has remained about the same over the past two decades. Today, more than 70,000 people call Muncie home.

Living in Muncie, IN

In the early 1800s, Munseetown was located along the White River, and was visited by British soldiers and Moravian missionaries before settlers made their claim on the land. In the early 1800s, Indians traveled to the Indiana territory, which was then a part of the Northwest Territory and was governed under the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. By 1827, Delaware County was founded as a small Indian village.

Like most other Midwestern communities, Muncie’s history is rooted with an agricultural and industrial past. After the arrival of the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad in 1852, industrial development began to prosper and aided in the growth of Muncie. The Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company’s move from Buffalo, New York, in 1888 played a significant role in the growth of the economy in Muncie.  Although the company moved to Colorado in 1998, the legacy of the Ball family lives on in Ball State University and Ball Memorial Hospital.

Another company that made a huge impact on the economic development is Warner Gear, which pioneered the development of automotive transmissions throughout the 20th century. The company conquered many milestones, including the standardization of the industry’s first manual transmission. In 1928 Warner Gear merged with other automotive companies to become Borg-Warner.

Muncie Work and Study

Many apartments in Muncie are occupied by students who attend Ball State University, which offers 180 undergraduate majors and professional programs, and more than 100 master’s degrees. The school specializes in architecture, telecommunications, landscape and education. Since Ball State University is located right downtown, many residents find employment at the school. The school is the top employer in Muncie followed by IU Health, Muncie Community Schools, IBM Call Center and Sallie Mae.
