Living in Valparaiso, IN

The first pioneers traveled through Valparaiso around 1670, although the first settler, French-Canadian Joseph Bailey didn’t arrive in the area until 1822. Bailey created a thriving fur post on Lake Michigan just 12 miles north of where Valparaiso is today. By 1832, the U.S. government purchased that piece of land from the Potawatomi Indians. Four years later, the state created a county line that separated LaPorte County from a new region called Porter County. That same year, commissioners were appointed and the city of Portersville was plotted. In 1837, the town was renamed Valparaiso. Because of the large amount of churches in the area, Valparaiso was called the City of Churches at the end of the 19th century.

The growth of Valparaiso was greatly impacted by new transportation. The Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne and Chicago Railroad reached to the area and connected it to Gary, Indiana. The construction of major roads such as Interstates 94, 80, 90 and 65 allowed residents of the area to travel to many other areas of the Midwest. Over time, Valparaiso has become a thriving community with a laid-back attitude and city lifestyle.
