The community of Ankeny began as a small farming region founded by John Fletcher Ankeny in April 1875. The active businessman was involved in local politics, and he was a promoter and stockholder of the Minnesota Narrow Gauge Railroad. By 1903, Ankeny was incorporated as a town that spanned one square mile. The community continued to prosper through agricultural opportunities and the opening of John Deere Des Moines Works. By the late 1940s, production included harvesting equipment for corn, cotton, sugar beets and potatoes.
