When construction began in Coralville in 1843, the town housed the largest dam along the Iowa River, which local mills used to generate hydroelectric power. The town received its name after a Harvard zoologist mentioned in a lecture that he was impressed by the fossilized coral he found in the limestone along the Iowa River. Today, Coralville is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa. The close distance between Coralville and Iowa City has caused the two to build a strong relationship over the years.
