In 1854, Grinnell was founded by a young minister named Josiah B. Grinnell. Considered a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, the city became a stop on the Underground Railroad. By the 1900s, there were many factories in the area that made products such as shoes, jackets, cans, washing machines and refrigerators. The world’s largest manufacturer of gauntlet gloves, the Morrison & Schults Glove factory, was also located here. The rich black prairie soil played a major part in Grinnell’s development, as agriculture was a huge contributor for the economy.
The opening of Grinnell College also played a big part in the development of the community. The college was originally founded in 1846, but classes didn’t begin until 1861.
