Overview of Gonzales

Known as the "Jambalaya Capital of the World" and full of antebellum-style architecture, Gonzales, La., is a fast-growing city that certainly isn't lacking any Southern charm. Conveniently located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, many Louisiana residents enjoy living in Gonzales apartments for rent because they have everything that a big city has to offer nearby, but still has the small-town atmosphere that is perfect for raising a family. Apparently the word is out about this charming city, as it has seen a 19 percent jump in population from 2000 to 2010, according to City-Data. With an ethnically diverse population, excellent school system and a welcoming way of life, Gonzales is a great place to live, work and play.

Living in Gonzales, LA

After the historic Louisiana Purchase made by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803, many places that are now called cities today originally started out as parishes, and Gonzales is no different. Nevertheless, it took some time for the city to build up. The area was originally full of French and Spanish squatters. However, once the railway made its way into the neighborhood, the area quickly began to grow into an industrial hub during the 19th century, eventually incorporating as a city in 1906. Today, Gonzales is home to more than 10,000 residents, according to a 2011 estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau. With a growing business community, excellent schools and friendly Southern charm, this quaint town remains a wonderful place to raise a family affordably. Based on information from City-Data, the cost of living index in the area is more than nine points below the nation's average.

Gonzales Attractions and Special Events

Since Cajun and Creole cuisine is what the city is known for, it should comes as no surprise that the biggest event in the area each year is the Jambalaya Festival. Part of the community for more than 40 years, this annual event features a World Champion Jambalaya contest, live musical entertainment, carnival rides for the kids and plenty of Louisiana down-home cooking.
