Living in Kenner, LA
European settlers first arrived in Jefferson Parish in the early 18th century. Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieure de Bienvielle, explored the Mississippi River and settled the high banks of the Mississippi Valley. In 1718, the French founded New Orleans to control the inland territories, and soon began burning the cane reeds in the land that would become Kenner. Plantations were quickly built along the Mississippi River and indigo, wheat, cotton and tobacco crops fueled the local agriculture-based economy.
In 1803, the Louisiana territory became part of the United States. The city was named after William Kenner in 1845. At the time, New Orleans was the Queen City of the South, but poor living conditions sent residents moving further away from downtown into neighboring cities. Today, Kenner has a passionate government that is always looking for ways to better the lives of local residents. As the sixth largest city in Louisiana, Kenner offers a very balanced lifestyle with a healthy business climate, community events, and distinctive Southern hospitality.
