Living in Metairie, LA
French explorers "found" the Metairie Ridge in the 1720s by traveling up the Mississippi River. Metairie became the first suburb of New Orleans. The city was named after the French word “moitoire,” which describes a unique French farming relationship between a landowner and a farmer including 50 percent of crops being used as rent payment. After the swamps and marshlands were drained, the land was used for farming until the 1940s population boom led to new housing developments taking over previous fields in the area.
Today the city streets are full of shops, professional buildings and shopping centers. There are areas that remain quaint and old-worldly, like the main Metairie Road which has maintained slow traffic patterns for decades. Metairie is currently experiencing a rental shift, where suburban residential communities are slowly evolving to include mixed commercial uses like night clubs, entertainment venues, offices and retail malls. Whether in Old Metairie or the “Fat City” commercial district, Metairie apartments in every neighborhood are sure to please.
