Overview of Monroe

Nestled in the banks of the Ouachita River, the city of Monroe, LA is one of the most lively and beautiful places in the Pelican State to live. As the seat of Ouachita Parish, Monroe has made quite a mark on the cultural livelihood and spirit of the bayous of northern Louisiana. With its prime location along Interstate 20, close proximity to many wildlife refuges, and warm, welcoming Southern hospitality, it makes sense that so many Louisiana residents are making their way into Monroe apartments for rent.

One of the biggest reasons why many people decide to call Monroe home is because you can raise a family here without breaking the bank. According to City-Data, the city's cost of living index is more than 14 points below the national average, making it a very affordable place to live, work, and play.

Living in Monroe, LA

The Ouachita Parish was established in 1807 and the town was named after U.S. president James Monroe to honor the current president at the time, and the first steamboat to travel up the Ouachita River into northern Louisiana. In the early 20th century, the first bottler of Coca-Cola, Joseph Biedenharn, became one of the city's most prominent settlers and was responsible for much of the city's growth during that time.

Today, the city is home to more than 48,000 residents according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, and that number is expected to grow as more people find out about this fantastic city.

Monroe Attractions and Special Events

Monroe is home to Layton Castle, a historic edifice that was built in the early 1900s, when the city saw much of its growth. Although it has been remodeled several times throughout the years, much of 19th century decor in the home remains.

If you love the great outdoors, you are in luck, as Monroe is situated near Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This park offers 4,500 acres of beautiful fisheries and scenic habitats for many of Louisiana's native creatures, including pelicans and other tropical songbirds.
