The Ouachita Parish was established in 1807 and the town was named after U.S. president James Monroe to honor the current president at the time, and the first steamboat to travel up the Ouachita River into northern Louisiana. In the early 20th century, the first bottler of Coca-Cola, Joseph Biedenharn, became one of the city's most prominent settlers and was responsible for much of the city's growth during that time. Today, the city is home to more than 48,000 residents according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, and that number is expected to grow as more people find out about this fantastic city.

Monroe is home to Layton Castle, a historic edifice that was built in the early 1900s, when the city saw much of its growth. Although it has been remodeled several times throughout the years, much of 19th century decor in the home remains.
