Looking for an escape from the heavily urbanized neighborhoods of Downtown? Charles Village in Baltimore may be the laid-back residential haven that you’ve been searching for. Snuggled up next to the renowned John Hopkins University, Charles Village is home to an eclectic mix of students, artists, and young families. Formerly known as Peabody Heights, this well-planned neighborhood is full of historic row housing and charming apartments. The many restaurants, coffee shops, and bars in the neighborhood keep the area lively, yet it’s also easy to avoid the noise and rest easy when you return home. Located not too far north and not too close to central Baltimore, Charles Village is situated just right. The neighborhood’s northern-central position is just a short bus or bike ride from all the activity in Mid-Town Belvedere and it’s an easy commute to the northern suburbs of Baltimore.
Possibly the best part about Charles Village apartments is that they are extremely affordable, especially when compared to their Downtown counterparts. Often nestled within beautiful brick buildings, one bedroom apartments in Charles Village Baltimore typically rent somewhere in the $600 to $900 range. Three bedroom apartments average up in the $1,700 to $2,200 range and are a great option for John Hopkins students looking to save money on rent, or young families who want to live in a friendly neighborhood. This neighborhood remains affordable because the buildings are older; however, many of these apartments reside within historic buildings and have been renovated to stay up-to-date with current trends.
Charles Village has several little pockets within that are filled with local restaurants, cafes, and small retail shops. The northern end of St. Paul Street and North Howard Street right below John Hopkins University are the main hubs of activity. Residents of the area frequent the quaint eateries while students are often found pouring over their studies in the local coffee shops. When night falls, there are also quite a few bars and small venues to choose from. On a typical day you can start your morning with a latte from Charmington’s, grab a vegan lunch at Meet 27, and end the night with a night cap and concert at Ottobar.
Charles Village residents also find it easy to get outdoors and enjoy some time in the sun at the Wyman Park Dell. This 16-acre public park rests on the eastern edge of Charles Village and is host to many events during the summer. Every week a different local band plays a free concert which is followed by a movie showing at dusk. While you’re exploring the park you can also hop over to The Baltimore Museum of Art which features of fine collection and hosts a series of summer Jazz Concerts.
We’re not sure why, maybe it’s because the building are historic and have certain limitations, but not very many apartments in this area allow dogs. Some allow cats, and there are a couple options that allow both dogs and cats, but if you have animals it does unfortunately narrow your search slightly.
When you do find your ideal pet friendly apartment in Charles Village, there are several independent companies that travel all over the city to take care of your pets within your own home. Fisher Pet Care is a local favorite dog walking service that is highly regarded by the community, plus there are several veterinarians and pet stores in the nearby communities.
When it comes to public transit, Charles Village is served by several bus lines; however there is no access to the light rail within this neighborhood. Access to the light rail and the trains at Penn Station are just a mere mile away so it is possible to ride bikes or even walk to areas with more options if you have the time. There are also quite a few hubs for Zipcar and RelayRides in this neighborhood.
If you are looking into higher education options in the larger Baltimore area, some colleges include John Hopkins University, the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and Baltimore City Community College, among others.
Prominent employers in the Baltimore area include Under Armour, Legg Mason, and Royal Farms, among others.
