Roland Park Baltimore is historically significant for being North America's first planned suburban community. It is also known for St. Mary's Seminary and University, which was the first seminary founded in the United States. Roland Park Baltimore was initially developed between the years of 1890 and 1920 as a streetcar suburb for the upper class, and it is named after Roland Thornberry, an early Baltimore County landowner. Roland Park is in the Baltimore City School District, and many residents choose to live in the town because of its outstanding schools. The public Roland Park Elementary and Middle School (K to 8th) has received recognition across the state for its commitment to mixing arts into the school’s curriculum and has been awarded the Maryland State Department of Education's Blue Ribbon for Academic Excellence. Private schools in the community include the Boys Latin School of Maryland, Bryn Mawr School, Calvert School, Gilman School, and the Friends School of Baltimore.
