Overview of Catonsville

Catonsville, Md., is home to a variety of annual events, restaurants and shops that help it stand out in the Old Line State. This census-designated place (CDP) had a population of more than 41,000 residents in 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau reports. Additionally, the area included 13.96 square miles of land and about 2,977 residents per square mile.

The Catonsville apartments for rent offer plenty to residents, including easy access to a wide variety of amenities, features and attractions. For example, many people enjoy the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park, Frederick Road Fridays and the local farmers market - just a few of the reasons why residents are happy to call this CDP home.

Living in Catonsville, MD

Piscataway Indians are considered the original inhabitants of Catonsville, and European settlers were among the first non-indigenous people to make their way to the area. In 1652, the Cromwellian Revolution brought more newcomers to the region, including many who were seeking religious refuge.

Many residents found the area filled with abundant waterways and rich forests that made it an appealing place to live. However, the Piscataway population dwindled due to disease and raids from Susquehannock Indians, leaving few original settlers by the time the Iroquois agreed to sign a peace treaty in 1685. The establishment of the Frederick Turnpike (which was later called Frederick Road), a westbound road from Baltimore to a flour mill on the Patapsco River, helped draw more people to the community in 1805.

Catonsville is frequently considered a conservative area, a place where kids usually go to school at the same institutions that their grandparents once attended. It is often seen as a solid, stable community, a place that's appealing to residents of all ages.

Catonsville Work and Study

Newcomers may pursue rentals in Catonsville to live close to many of the top employers in Baltimore, which is about 13 miles northeast of the CDP. Some of Baltimore's major employers include John Hopkins University (JHU), John Hopkins Hospital and Health System, the University System of Maryland, University of Maryland Medical System and Medstar Health.

JHU is considered to be one of the top colleges in the area. This higher education institution was founded in 1876, and hosts roughly 5,000 undergraduate students from 50 majors, including engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is another higher-education choice that is easily accessible for many Catonsville residents. This school is part of the University System of Maryland, and the Carnegie Foundation ranks the institution highly in the category of Research Universities due to its high level of research activity.

Rentals in Catonsville, MD and Cost of Living

The apartments for rent in Catonsville, Md., typically range from between $800 to $1,600 per month, varying depending on the size and amenities a unit features. It's likely that you'll pay a little bit more to live in this CDP, but the area's proximity to Baltimore makes it an ideal option for many newcomers.

Catonsville Attractions and Special Events

Catonsville boasts two farmers markets that offer residents goods from local farmers. Vendors commonly sell a wide selection of products, including bread, eggs, maple syrup, produce and meats at these events. Farmers markets are held every Wednesday and Sunday from May to November - rain or shine.

Sports fans might also appreciate Catonsville, especially those who enjoy baseball and football. The CDP is close to Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium, the homes of the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens, respectively.
