Overview of Elkton
Elkton, MD is located along the northern waters of Chesapeake Bay in Cecil County. The small, historic community is perfectly nestled between Washington, D.C., and New York City, while Baltimore and Philadelphia are only a short drive away. Residents of the community are lucky enough to experience the charm and comfort of a small town with all the amenities and resources available in a major metropolitan area.
The quaint community played a significant role in some of the country’s most important times, such as the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Elkton apartments for rent are amidst a rich history still prevalent today in the colonial structures.
According to statistics, the population has drastically increased in the past two decades. Since 1990, Elkton's population has nearly doubled to roughly 15,500 residents today.
Living in Elkton, MD
While Elkton played a major role in two of America’s wars, it also has a significant role in transportation. James Rumsey, a resident of Cecil County, was the original inventor of the steamboat. Although he died before his product was manufactured, he was often seen along the Chesapeake Bay on one of his first steamboats, The Eagle. The boat served Elkton, which was then considered Head of Elk in 1815.
Also, one of the first railroads was built in 1831, linking Cecil County to Delaware. Created to protect trade routes, it connected industry to canals and ports. The vehicle was originally pulled by horses until 1833, when steam locomotives were introduced. Within 30 years, the railroad served as an efficient mode of transportation through the entire county.
